As a general rule when most medications expire they have reached their appropriate potency limitations, and after expiration they tend to degrade over time. Some medications faster than others.l was wondering if anyone familiar with Zyban could give me a good estimate of how useful 5 month expired zyban would be.

Thanks :)
To note, zyban is now used as a quit smoking aid.l was deployed to Iraq for 15 months and my PA gave me 2 bottles. The first l used and quit for 4 months. The second l maintained to fight off repalpse, as instructed by my PA.(Keep in mind l am also a medic in the army, so l do have a basic grasp of medication, drugs, and so forth).l work very closely with doctors, and am trained to Paramedic level.

l have the second bottle because l was giving a two month supply, and was instructed one the first bottle was gone (30 day supply) to take the second bottle.l quit smoking 10 days into the dose, and after 30 days of non-smoking felt l was safe to discontinue the medication.l did start smoking again 4 months later, but l am again working on quitting smoking.

l could very easily go to the PA again and get another bother, but l have a bottle on hand already, and experience using the medication.HEnce my question :)Thanks.
Sorry for the horrible spelling, I am using a new keyboard.

I have a month supply of zyban but it expired in november of 2007. What type of potency loss can be expected?

Drugs & similar fragile chemicals start decomposing immediately after manufacture. It is a judgment call when however much of it will remain in the average situation to call that ''expired''. If u kept the stuff cool & away from ultraviolet radiation (sunlight usually), chances r u have more potency left available than someone would have had 5 months ago, who left it in a typical & predictable warm place occasionally, like a pocket. A better question is how long has it been since u had a follow-up examination? If u r feeling better, why take the meds, & if not, why have not u seen ur physician in so long? If u feel more secure having a ''backup jar then how much more secure would u feel if u either had a fresh jar, or freed yourself by disposing of that jar? All these questions! Things to talk about at ur next appointment, the most important topics of which may be, ''Do I need permission to feel cured? & ''Is it a good idea for me to keep a fresh jar as a security blanket?'' Good luck. Regards, Larry.
